We participated in the CEATEC Japan, which is a large scale international comprehensive exhibition that bring together competing innovation capabilities, propose the new ‘NEXT’ and work towards realizing new businesses in the future. The exhibition that was held at the Makuhari Messe on October 7-10, 2015 was divided into 3 categories: Lifestyle & Society Stage, NEXT Innovation Area and Key Technologies Stage. We demonstrated a Silicon-Organic Hybrid Optical Modulator attached to the camera to transmit high definition video/data in the Key Technologies Stages. This result is part of the S-Innovation project goal where a large scale integration of high-speed optical interconnect module for the vehicles applications will be realized in one chip. laser

It was an "Open Campus" day for the Yoto and MIne campuses of Utsunomiya University. The "Open Campus" is an event whitch leaves a good chance to senior high school students to experimence in-deep. As an advanced optical engineering lab, we introduced optical fibers and demonstrated laser beam transmission experiment to the audiences. In spite of the first time for our lab to joint this big event, we received a lot of interests and concerns from the participants. laser

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiasm new students to join our laboratory. In our laboratory, the students will study optical waveguide devices such as planar optical waveguide including optical field distribution in the optical fibers and high performance optical materials for optical communication applications. Our main target is creating optical circuits to establish the complete optical devices on a board. We would like to recruit ambitious students who want to have better understanding, realization capabilities, and investigate more deeply of the optical circuits. The research theme will be decided after sufficient discussions between the students and the teaching staff.  We introduced our research laboratories during the student visit as a part of the optics course. The students visited our material characterization and device fabrication laboratory where they saw the material characterization equipments and cleanroom. The students also visited our optical waveguide characterization laboratory. Here, we demonstrated the optical waveguide measurement technique and propagation laser light in the plastic optical fiber, another type of the optical waveguides and showed some optical waveguide devices. Prof. Sugihara delivered brief information about the importance of the advanced photonic-based information and telecommunication technology such as high-speed and broad-bandwidth data transmission systems. 0709kengaku
